“We all got our politics from Pete Seeger. He woke up my consciousness to the power of music to make people aware. People tried to discredit him. They tried to put him out of the limelight. They tried to say he was a communist. But while we would wring our hands, Pete Seeger would go out and change things. He set such a brilliant example for us at every age.” – Linda Ronstadt
March is Women’s History Month – an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.
With this in mind, let’s celebrate Linda Ronstadt!
“Being generous of spirit is a wonderful way to live.” – Pete Seeger
In a career that spanned more than 70 years, Pete Seeger served as a mentor and leading light to countless singer-songwriters who came in his wake. One such person was Linda Ronstadt.
Linda Ronstadt’s earliest musical memories were of listening to records by Pete Seeger’s folk revival group The Weavers.
On September 6, 2019, a Linda Ronstadt documentary “The Sound of My Voice” premiered. Featuring new and archival interview footage with Linda Ronstadt and some of her musical collaborators and longtime friends, the film is a stirring reminder of Linda Ronstadt’s vocal prowess across musical genres, made all the more poignant by the singer’s battle with Parkinson’s disease and her subsequent retirement from performing in 2009.
“The Sound of My Voice” touches on many facets of Linda Ronstadt’s life: her Mexican ancestry, her folk and country beginnings, and her role as one of rock music’s most influential women. It also delves into her unlikely, but hugely successful, forays into light opera, the Great American Songbook, and one of country music’s most successful collaborative albums of all time, “Trio”. Musicians who appear in the film include Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, and songwriter Karla Bonoff.
“The essential elements of singing are voice, musicianship, and story. It is the rare artist that has all three in abundance.” – Linda Ronstadt
Linda Ronstadt has all three in abundance.
“Linda Ronstadt is the only vocalist I ever met who could sing any song from any genre and make it sound beautiful.” – Dolly Parton
