…a father’s dying message

I don’t typically watch the Masters until the final few holes on Championship Sunday. That changed this year after I heard about Sam Bennett’s story. Sam, an amateur from Texas, was near the top of the leader board most of the tournament.

Sam, 23 and still competing in college, didn’t blink one time. He didn’t look nervous and definitely wasn’t intimidated by the professionals in his pairing. He played excellent golf the entire weekend.

But it wasn’t his consistent play at Augusta National that caught my attention.

Sam’s father Mark passed away in 2021 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Mark’s last written message (with assistance from his wife Stacy) to his son was “Don’t wait to do something.”

That inspirational message, now tattooed on Sam’s left arm, serves as a daily reminder to not waste a day of your life, to live life to its fullest and to chase your dreams.

Sam may not have put on the prestigious green jacket this weekend, but he captured the hearts of an entire country and added a new member to his growing fan club.
